A Static Item is the most commonly used item on Writing.Com. It is used for any single piece of writing that stands on its own, such as a story, poem, essay, or article.

When to Use a Static Item

Use a Static Item when you want to create and share one complete piece of writing.

Examples include:

• Short stories
• Poems
• Essays
• Articles
• Chapters (if not part of a Book)
• and more similar writings

If your writing is part of a larger, multi-entry project, you may want to use a Book instead.

Create a Static Item

Creating a Static Item is quick:

1) Click +Create Something
2) Choose Static Item
3) Enter your title, start writing in the editor, and set any preferences in the form

Click the gear icon when viewing your item to edit.

Key Settings

When creating your item, a few settings are worth paying attention to:

• Title - Your item’s name
• Brief Description – A short summary that appears in listings
• Content Rating - Choose the appropriate rating for your writing
• Access - Control who can view your item
• Genres and Tags - Help others find your work
• Sub Type – Lets you be more specific (poem, article, etc.), which helps with browsing and search

You don’t need to perfect everything right away—these can all be adjusted later.
