Haiti: Some thoughts on the islands

water so blue it shines
and an island
that rises from the sea
like a turtle—
Tortuga. Hispaniola.
the names speak of pirates
and voodoo
and freedom.

and an earthquake
that leaves children hungry—
seven years later,
and hurricanes
washing over the island
sweeping all away.
