Night Noises Noises random echoes in the night: distant sirens reverberate, jolt me awake. I doze off. Metro helicopter buzzes the neighborhood, its spot light shining through the closed vertical blinds. Awake again! Did I hear gun shots? Was that a car backfiring? I reach for my smartphone, and check the time. Midnight! I click on the prayer app, say the Midnight prayer1, and intone the Table of Ahmad2. I stare into the darkness waiting for sunrise I pray for a few seconds of sleep before my day begins. Poet's Note: ▶︎ |
