I will be adding stories, poems & reflections as the year marches on. Take a gander today!
|It was my sister's special day and I wanted to make it even more special.
I rented a cabin for us for the week. She was delighted. I did not need to do any more but I wanted to.
I wanted to recreate the August 10ths from our childhood and bring back some of our shared memories.
We used to have a picnic on Grandma's screened-in back porch each August to celebrate Marki coming into the world.
I did my best to set the scene at the cabin on Alabama. I made our mom's potato salad and grandmas very dark and strong ice tea. We had hot dogs and hamburgers (typical for a summer picnic). And for dessert...
Well, Grandma was a baker so I needed to bake the perfect dessert. I bought a Duncan Hines mix. It said "Spice" on the box.
A mixture of Philadelphia soft cheese and confectioners sugar would add the finishing touch.
I made the topping with care, using a hand mixer and beating it til it was smooth and yummy. Then I carefully spread it smoothly over the cooled 9×13 dessert. The sweet topping tasted delicious as I licked the beaters.
It wasn't time for the big reveal so I snapped the cover for the new pan into place and hid the surprise in my room.
Then the time arrived. I took the lid off and, to my shragrin, so did most of the topping and part of the dessert.
The main attraction at this resort was a giant hole in the ground filled with icy cold water. It looked like I had made a model of the giant hole.
My sister and I had a good laugh. She grabbed a spoon and helped herself to the portion still sticking to the lid.
What a surprise! LOL
