The Last Christmas Tree
DDPC Round 35 Prompt 2 Dec 2019

The Last Christmas Tree

The last Christmas tree
stands in the darkness waiting
for Christmas to come,
for Santa Clause to arrive.

The last Christmas Tree,
its artificial boughs green--
as the day it was manufactured--
stares out of frost covered windows
looking for the family that
will never return.

The last Christmas tree,
encased in the webs of fear
and infested by the spiders of hopelessness,
waits for its presents
to be unwrapped
at dawn on Christmas morning
by people,
who no longer exist.
