A couple centuries ago what was reported in the news was only a small part of the daily drama that others chose to share, that we chose to hear. An obscure poet wrote:
When we lived in Japan I noticed that sick people wore masks. All of them. All the time they were in public.
My friend's dad's in the hospital and she and her mom are wearing masks whenever there. A nurse criticized her for it, saying the masks were for sick people but my friend said, "none of the sick people are wearing masks so we have to!" I'm not sure how much the masks actually help when breathing recirculated hospital air but it's better than nothing.
Now that's something very interesting.. although not sure if it's on the positive or negative side; it's actually more on the 'hard to believe' side. Then again, appearances are everything.
Not to be judgmental or anything, it's sort of like that saying "you can take the girl out of the county, but you can't take the country out of the girl" sort of thing.
Edited response to an email:
[Gay marriage is] already recognized in Spain, Quebec, Ontario, elsewhere. It is never necessary that other disinterested parties give consent for marriage which is what this comes down to. "Marriage" is a legal contract, no more, no less. For spiritual people it is more of course and for religious people it must follow certain rules, but really ... why should anyone else care?
Why not just make all marriages "Civil Unions" and let churches and others grant "Marriage Certificates" if they want to? B E C A U SE that would be granting people basic human rights and we wouldn't want that ...
Well, Barbara, Scarlett would have to defer to the Queen ... I think she's up for that! . Nada could go toe to toe with royalty if it were shoes instead of hats. Imagine that!
I hope you got to witness the hailstorms here the other day on the webcam. It was pretty wild. Sure doesn't compare to flooding, but I certainly felt like a prisoner in my own house for a couple of very long minutes.
Paige: The very first comment on this blog! (I'm rotating and this one is new).
I wouldn't bet on turning things around just yet. There has always been this fallacy that democracy is good for everyone. That 51% can deny basic human rights will remain a problem until those rights are protected. I don't know whether the younger generation understands that. They can change minor/major laws and coast thinking that things have changed only to have their grandchildren dismantle everything. A despot could easily accomplish this through fear. Sound familiar? But democracies do it too. Racism didn't go away in the 60s, but laws did change and a class of people were 'protected', kinda ... cultural change can be ahead of the laws or far far behind.
