I am a political scientist, a humanist, a feminist and I write erotica - here I share thoughts, considerations and perceptions related to all, interlinked and interwoven, academic or merely thoughtful.
Come talk to me.
I think it depends what is predominant - the conspiracy or the erotic side? If it is the conspiracy then I would argue it is a mystery. Just because it has sex in it does not mean it has to be erotica.
I like your sorting system but found one question repeatedly popping up in my mind. What about those of us who write sex scenes in dramatic works that are light on romance but very plot intensive? I find typical romance writings rather hard to stomach because it generally follows a formula that drives me mad, so I set out to write my own take on it. When that happens I end up writing something involving a conspiracy or other non-romantic twist that makes itself central. Am I the only one that does this, or other writers who do the same? If it's the latter, where do we fit on the sliding scale?
What an excellent post! I'm no academic nor scholar, but from long past exchanges, I can sympathize ( I am pretty sure it is that more than empathize since I'm no academic nor scholar) with what you are saying. I certainly confess a level of intimidation by your academic prowess, but arrogance has never once crossed my mind. Nope arrogance does not fit... if anything, I have been conflicted with how such an academic could seem so... well,... normal. I guess an academic or intellectual being normal is enough to leave one seriously confused - can i say you deserve it? {e;smile]
Here ye, hear ye... visit with Christine. to know her is to love her, and don't let intimidation get you down. Christine is a worthy friend.
Well, if you don't mind her pissing you off once in a while.
I don't know if you are as rational as you want us to believe. But then, that's a bias I suppose... okay, I'm kidding but doing my best. Come on... I'm simple folk. Then again, recall some comments which seemed you didn't anticipate being adjudged rational at all. Now I have myself confused.
Sorry you have frustrations. Maybe the specter of academics creates a bias... we expect the worst of you.
Okay, I'm being a smart ass - I am going to assume you recognize that. But, being an academic, maybe you'll take this seriously. There is only one part that is serious. You get to figure out what it is cause you're so dang smart. [e:Biglaugh}
Yoda says - academics just might over think some things... not everything is complex. Christine (you) need verbal discourse that challenges intellectual thought. Some intellectuals just might struggle over the opinions of some that don't feel the need to invest such high level intelectal thought.
for me it's the KISS Principle. Keep it simple stupid. you're okay... don't forget that. You are a special person.
Deep thoughts, Christine. I will confess that submissive fantasies always left me baffled. I mean I could see the thrill but not the need for surrendering the absolute control. You made a valid point, my friend.
I would say pornography paints a picture which allows the reader to do with as they please whilst erotica pulls the reader into a pre-established sexual situation to live through.
I agree they are of the same genre, as I would consider epic fantasy and urban fantasy of the same genre. I believe nevertheless there is a difference between porn, erotica and romance, though I see them all part of the same grouping.
Not everyone "stands back" from pornography. It's possible to use pornography as the jumping off point for a personal fantasy that is very much "living through the experience".
For me, there is no real difference between erotica and pornography other than erotica is likely to spend more time on the situational factors and pornography is more likely to be poorly done.
It's not like they are two different things. It's more like they are two ways of portraying sex which have a slight difference of emphasis between them. Kind of like muted colors vs bright colors. Or blurred focus vs sharp focus.
Which one would be pornography? Where the author is painting a picture to look at? Or where the author is trying to make the reader feel that he is participating in the story?
