I have been asked why I write and my answer is usually ‘ because I have something to say.’

For Whom the Pen Toils

I simply write for myself
and, of course, to share
my feelings about the things I’ve seen
and the beauty that’s everywhere.

I know the world is different
from the few countries where I’ve been
but nature leaves her many gifts
in countries I’ll not be seein.

I look for treasures everywhere
under trees and shrubs,
in the forest undergrowth
and in potted garden tubs.

It’s always there, in the bush
and it takes a watchful eye,
plus a very open mind
to see, and not pass by.

I am now an urban dweller
like so many others are
But I still love the rural life,
where there are no noisy cars.

I can relax, my mind upon a high,
and that toiling pen can then create,
something from the dreaming thoughts
behind my mental gate.

The atmosphere, way out of town
really lets me be at ease,
and its there that my toiling pen
works so hard to please.
