A June Croon

Oh, the merry month of June,
if it hadn’t been so soon,
I wouldn’t be so old,
if I may make so bold.

For then I would be born
on some much later morn,
the years they would be fewer,
and I, with them, much newer.

Upside Down

They lived happily ever after
though that may appear even dafter
than this tale which reaches its end
with story itself not yet penned.

Adventure’s not in the middle
it’s saved as sort of a riddle
and strangest in this silly rhyme
the ending’s once up on a time.

Rhymed aabb
For Express It In Eight, 02.22.24
Prompt: Write an out-of-order poem.
Note: “Upon” is written as “up on” to force the reader to stick with the rhythm. It’s called poetic license.

It’s Only a Paper Moon

It’s only a paper moon
and all the world’s a stage
a firehose for the monsoon
and virtual the rage.

But you can keep the play today
the author’s not Old Bill
it doesn’t matter what they say
just take the devil’s pill.

For Express It In Eight, 02.21.24
Prompt: Take the phrase “It’s Only ___”, replace the blank with a word or phrase, and make that the title of your poem.

Cup

The cupped hands that hold fresh water
clear and cold from the stream
dripping with the gift of life
and special to each one of us
our personalised cup
that lifts the quenching liquid
sweet and limpid
to our lips.

Fortitude

The time arrived at last,
I gather my biblical loins,
and, mindful of the past,
my future bought with coins,
thoughtless of final death,
intrepid still my way,
I take a deeper breath,
and rise to face the day.

For Express It In Eight, 02.19.24
Prompt: Breathe deeply.

Goodnight

High in the sky rides the moon,
a sliver of silver in velvet bed,
with diamond stars random strewn
on sheets of blackest thread.

Overarching coverlet,
the heavens our nightly spread,
and tucked in earthly pallet,
the world’s asleep in bed.

For Express It In Eight, 02.18.24
Prompt: Write a silver poem.

Wild Goose Chase

Never met a tame goose
in a cage or on the loose
so I look for wild geese
Greek or cooked in grease.

Sometimes they are on the wing
of the south they honk and sing
but the smartest thing they did
turkeys fill their Christmas bid.

Slowhand

The Enga man slips in
and steals the finest notion -
an instrument he be
of music and devotion.

Which leaves me with the bones,
both aged and aching now,
and yes, a tune they make
but I’ll not take a bow.

Prompt: Write a poem about archaeology or a cave or treasure or music or bones.

Dirty Little Secret

Dirty little secret, dark and dim,
hides in the heart of human sin,
tinkers with the truth and closes eyes,
fudges with the facts and tells its lies.

Open up the window, let light in,
throw away the cover, see how thin
is the little secret now revealed,
funny how it withers unconcealed.

Line count: 8
Rhymed aabb
For Express It In Eight, 02.14.24
Prompt: Write about something uncovered.

Down

Look into the abyss
and it will look into you
or so they say
but now it seems
it reaches out
hungry hands
to pull you down
into the depths.

Prompt: Illustration of hands reaching up from blackness.
