Poems for years 4, 5, 6 and 7 of the Promptly Poetry Challenge. |
A year's worth of poems, every week for 52 weeks, spanning 2023 and 2024, plus the years following, from August 2024 to August 2025, 2025 to 2026 (provided I live that long, of course).
Nine Nine Nine Three nines are twenty-seven, dressed to the nines three times; there are easier ways to enter heaven than finding so many rhymes. Multiplication is all very well, divide and conquer much less; quantum mechanics is no way to tell, and none of them Porgy and Bess. Here in the States we’re talking of math but maths is the subject elsewhere. in Yorkshire they may call it a path, but single or plural who cares? Line count: 12 Rhymed abab For Promptly Poetry Challenge 7, Week 2 Prompt: Twenty-seven.
I Know About Water “It’s dehydration,” he says, my urologist named Jez, and he demands that I drink more water than would fill the sink. “Impossible, I can’t do that,” I cry, but, you know me, I have to try. How much is three litres I wonder, I’m drowning already and going under. Divide and conquer, that’s how to do it, it has to be done or one day I’ll rue it. So coffee will count and I’ll add some tea, don’t give up Coke, I have to be free. Water with flavour, water with meds, glug it and gulp it from morning till bed. Now I am full from my head to my toe, the bathroom is calling and I have to go. Line count: 16 Rhyming couplets For Promptly Poetry Challenge 7, Week 1 Prompt: Water.
A Happy Ending There’ll be no sunset to ride into, it’ll not be a matter of derring-do; no golden words or fragrant flowers, no stirring music for the final hours. I see it as a sigh of blessed relief, with time exposed as a vagrant thief and unhallowed days of long ago revealed at last as rather shallow. When all comes down to one more breath, goodbye to life, hello to death, with this I swear I’ll be content, the smile upon my face is meant. Line count: 12 Rhyming couplets For Promptly Poetry Challenge, Week 52 Prompt: Write about a “happy ending.”
Quickened How long’s a moment, a slice of time, a generous scoop, or a pinch so fine? And happiness too, a great guffaw, or content warm, no loud hurrah? But sudden instant or lifetime long, to walk with God’s the happiest song. Line count: 12 Rhymed abcb For Promptly Poetry Challenge, Week 51 Prompt: Write about a moment when you felt very happy.
A Wrong Rhyme It’s the wrong day, and the wrong way, the wrong time, on the wrong dime. For the wrong thing, and the wrong fling, much the wrong thought, for the wrong court. And the wrong sight in the wrong light, though not too long, it’s the wrong song. Line count: 12 Rhymed aabb For Promptly Poetry Challenge, Week 50 Prompt: Use the phrase “the wrong day” in your poem.
The Gang Sir Egg Cup and his spoon takes a tired bow, his friend, the bulldog clip, long departed now. And neighbour Coffee Mug aloof, beverage proud and bold, has little time for lesser vessel - a snob he is I’m told. But now the flashy keyboard black, rattling through the day, gabbles words and words and words, cares not who hears him say. While bright and wise, the Monitor, gazes on them all, though chief among assembled crew, Remote has final call. Medicine dispenser, calendar, eyeglasses and more; they crowd around me every day, assistants to the core. Line count: 20 Rhymed abcb For Promptly Poetry Challenge, Week 49 Prompt: Write a poem listing and connecting mundane objects around you. Consider how you interact with them, and how they interact with each other.
