| The World Cup Giant killers on the field David with his sling calls out the mighty champ Goliath in his pomp and Beanstalk Jack strides the clouds alone the giant lost in dreams turned now at last to nightmare So indeed to Paraguay forgotten retiring Paraguay oh land of unrenown young Paraguay bad fortuned from the start but now in strife unbound they hold the giant down and trade him blow for blow Hold out the siege impossible to blunt the giant’s wrath and then in penalties that gamble at the end till Paraguay wee Paraguay oh Paraguay the brave send Germany back home! Save them all these manifest disasters with your conquests and battles and revolution the turmoil of life and being. Just leave me in my dull and boring round my silent and scorned existence so beneath notice or report such minor magic of peace and quiet. I’ll sing of your deeds when you’re gone. | Tuesday On a day like this starkly bright with unshuttered sun eyes aching in the heat and winter-dry bones sucking in the warmth the sky empty of all but blue my skin shrivels between pain and pleasure All is still till a breath of movement stirs the air a moment of cool relief and herald of noisy other life senses now awake and conscious of police siren on the freeway horizon the afternoon reels But then returns the sun and my roasting’s done.
