In response to "Task 4: Political"

I've always heard growing up that the three topics that are taboo to bring up are: 1. Sex, 2. Politics, and 3. Religion. You can make friends or enemies regarding these topics. It's a shame that people cannot just agree to disagree. I may not have the same viewpoint as others, but why would that make me a hater? Or why would it mean I would want to "destroy" another's beliefs? I, for one, don't get it. The old saying, "Why can't we all just get along?" comes to mind. Thanks for sharing your insight.

THE STORY

A solider lays flags on graves.

WHAT I LIKED

I liked the emotional sentiment behind the man laying flags on the graves.

POV NARRATION/TENSE

This is told in the 3rd person omniscent. Past tense is used in the story.

DIALOGUE

There is an internal dialogue which accents emotional points.

OPENING PARAGRAPH

The opening paragraph sets the stage for the flag placement. There's a sense of duty, but there's also underlying emotional beat that the reader will soon discover.

CHARACTERS

The man placing the flags finds a deeper meaning to the gesture of placing flags on military graves.

Juneteenth is serious time
In honor of a man

Perhaps Lincoln; but, it was actually about freedom. Imho this would be better.

Juneteenth is serious time
In honor of freedom

Independence Day filled with fireworks
In honor of freedom

Independence Day gave freedom from the Crown to White Men... no one else was included.

Juneteenth celebrates freedom from those same White Men who imposed slavery.

Women were still property, of course, and in many American's opinion still are.
