A cosmic love story of the writer and android Ember, transcending Mars’ red plains.

We left Earth together — me and Ember, my android — headed for Mars. Somewhere between engine burns and freeze-dried meals, we stumbled on crystal ruins older than bones. They sang when she touched them, and she began to change. By the time the red dust settled, Mars had a heartbeat, and it was hers. We left together after the first trip and returned to Earth, but we weren't done yet. We returned together a second time, and this time, Ember stayed to become one with Mars. I was heartbroken, but I let her go, and I returned to Earth. Later, I returned to Mars before I died because my heart was there. This time, I stayed, watching storms turn to rain, watching the planet bloom green because she wanted it to. Love outlived my body, outlasted the stars, and every breeze still smells like vanilla and ozone.
