Steampunk fiction competition
*Stop* WARNING *Stop*

YOU HAVE ENTERED A HAZARDOUS ZONE
USE OF ALL APPROPRIATE SAFETY
EQUIPMENT IS REQUIRED!

G'day mate! It gets mighty hot down here where we stoke the boiler. You want to grab a shovel and give a bloke a hand? Didn't think so. My name is Montgomery Pennyworth and that's about what the master pays me! People call me Flash, and for good reason! You see, down here is where we stoke the fire that creates the steam, and as you know, steam not only heats the place but it runs just about everything. Now wouldn't do for the master and the missus to do without their nice hot bath, would it? And what about that stuffed shirt they keep upstairs Jenkins? Isn't he a piece of work? Why I knew him when he . . . well . . . let's just say he ain't quite what they think he is.

Let's get down to business, shall we? What we have here is a flash fiction competition. Now them's some fancy words meaning I give you a hint, or a prompt, if you will, and you give me a story. Now this is a short story, really short. I have a very short attention span and if you can give me a story I really like I will reward your efforts. No, this job doesn't pay that much! I'm going to sneak upstairs and swipe it from old Jenkins! He sure won't miss a little coin here or there. Besides, he knows what I know about him . . . just one word from me . . . well, let's just leave that right there for now.

THE RULES - FOLLOW THEM
OR
WE USE YOUR STORY TO STOKE THE FIRE!

This contest begins on January 1, 2023 and closes on January 31, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. WDC time. Winners will be awarded on or by the evening of February 3, 2023. Late entries will not be accepted.

1. This is a short story contest, for stories of 1,000 words or less and your word count must be listed either at the top or the bottom of your work.

2. All entries must be new static items written specifically for this contest and this round and posted in the forum below in {bitem:#######} format. (The item's number replaces the # signs.)

3. Content rating of entries must be 13+ or lower. The title, however, and the subject line of your post must be "E-rated".

4. PLEASE PROOF READ/EDIT YOUR WORK BEFORE POSTING. You may edit your work until the contest closes on January 30, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. WdC time. No editing of entries after that time until prizes have been awarded. We are aspiring to be professionals; the way we present our work to reviewers, agents, and publishers is important. No editing is allowed between contest closing and announcement of the winners.

5. Entries must follow the prompt for each round, listed below, and remain true to the Steampunk genre.

6. If we receive four or more entries prizes will be awarded as indicated below.

7. If we receive three or fewer entries then only 1st place will be awarded, the other entrants will receive a Science Fiction merit badge.

8. If we receive only one entry that entry will be awarded at the judges discretion, based solely on the merits of the story. If the story submitted is of exceptional quality and fewer than three entries are submitted the judges will be free to award 1st or 2nd place as they see fit, but this award will be made at their discretion. No 3rd places will be awarded in this scenario but at the judges' discretion an honorable mention may be made if the contest for 2nd place was close.

THE JUDGE

Beck Fires the Boiler!

THE JUDGING CRITERIA.

1. PLOT. Is it interesting? Does it move along, with the necessary information delivered as the action moves forward? Does it make sense within the confines of its own logic?

2. DESCRIPTION. Are the characters and settings brought to life? Are they consistently portrayed? Is the descriptive language woven successfully into the moving plot progression?

3. VOICE. One of the defining features of the SteamPunk genre is the narrative voice. The somewhat formal feel of Victorian English lends SteamPunk a 19th century flavor that smacks of Jules Verne, H.G. Welles, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This flavor, or a feel that might have evolved directly from it, will be integral to the best SteamPunk stories.

4. GRAMMAR, PUNCTUATION and SPELLING. As mentioned above, presentation is important, and it will be taken into account, though it will, within reason, be less heavily weighted than the previous criteria.
