What Is the "Fingers on Fire" Contest?
Each year in November (National Novel Writing Month and "November: Marathon" ), we host a month-long competition where you earn points for participating in and winning 15-minute and 30-minute writing sprints each day. Your points accumulate throughout the month, and the sprinters with the highest accumulated points at the end of November take home the ribbons for first, second, and third place.

Since you get points for participating without winning, it's possible to earn enough points to place at the end of the month even if you're not the fastest writer.

What Is a Writing Sprint?
Two or more people write at the same time. At the end of the sprint, whoever has the highest word count wins the sprint. The way to win is to shut off your editor and write with wild abandon. No backspacing or deleting! Writing Sprints are very motivating.

You may write anything you want, and you don't have to show us what you wrote. We only need your word count, which the system will automatically provide.

When Are the Writing Sprints for "Fingers on Fire"?
Throughout November, you can earn points by participating in two types of writing sprints - regularly scheduled daily Official Sprints, and Mini Sprints that you can schedule at any time:

Official Sprints are 30 minutes, every day in Nov. Official Sprints proceed regardless of the number of participants, so if you're writing alone, you get 8 Score Points automatically. Official Sprints are scheduled as follows (WDC times):

02:00 (2:00 am)

06:00 (6:00 am)

10:00 (10:00 am)

14:00 (2:00 pm)

18:00 (6:00 pm)

22:00 (10:00 pm)

Mini Sprints are 15 minutes, and may be proposed by any sprinter in the forum on the quarter-hour (:00, :15, :30, :45). At least two sprinters are required for participation Score Points to be awarded. *However, if you log words for a solo ("invalid") mini sprint, those logged words do contribute to your November word count total.

Accumulating Score Points

Earn 5 pts for participating in an Official Writing Sprint (even if writing solo.)

3 add'l pts to the 1st place winner of the Official Sprint (total 8 pts)

2 add'l pts to the 2nd place winner of the Official Sprint (total 7 pts)

1 add'l pt to the 3rd place winner of the Official Sprint (total 6 pts)

Earn 2 points for participating in a Mini Sprint (minimum of 2 sprinters required.)
