I'm in agreement with you, especially the part of being unable to read the classics.

My question is, why are people constantly assuming today's youth is stupid, that they are incapable of learning as we and every person before us did?

I hope you're right in that this idea will continue to bounce off people's heads and finally end up into the trashcan of bad ideas.
