I'll definitely check out your portfolio. Good luck on the glasses, that stinks. When I have the money I'm getting my eyes lasered.

As far as motivation usually what helps me is to just sit and let my characters talk. Don't write anything down just let them wander around your mind and talk; do everyday things: go to the grocery store, the dr., a movie, a date. It helps me to understand who they are and how they act. Sometimes I find out little things about them that help progress the story and even make it richer.
