I've seen everyone's posts for this topic and one big thing comes to mind that seems a no-brainer to me but can sometimes be sidestepped. The most important thing to storytelling in my opinion is that it's enjoyable. If you don't like reading what you write, it makes sense that others won't as well. Tenses, spelling, word choice etc. aren't much more than niggling details if you don't like the story or any aspect of it, and if you don't like it you won't want to do it. It will become an annoying chore.
