By far I would have to nominate Jean Luc Picard for the best captain. He actually endured assimilation and returned with minimal damage. More than that Picard constantly had to match wits with Q and who else could live a lifetime in an alien society, raise a family, and grow to a ripe old age and then return to the Enterprise all in less than an hour? He also, to his credit foiled the invasion of whatever those insect like things were that invaded the Admiralty.

Picard was also a father figure to Wesley (voted most likely to be pushed out an airlock in his Academy class) Crusher, though was never really committed to Dr. Crusher.

Granted, he lost his first command the Stargazer but he also had to deal with his future self and being possessed by some weird energy lifeform from some nebula.

Not to mention having to keep a Klingon in line on the bridge.

All in all though he missed his big opportunity with Vash, thus proving himself to be a better man than JTK.

"All decks, all stations this is the Captain, you may stand-down from red alert, return to normal peacetime cruising stations."
