I've got the wrong geography, of course, but we did. There was an Italian place for ice-cream and coffee, and I think I started drinking coffee at fifteen or abouts. Before, it was tea (flavored with vanilla, or cocos, or somesuch nonsense). Some of us might have had a coke instead, or ice-cream, but coffee wasn't unusual. And when you went past the place, you always stopped and looked because at any time of the day or year, there was somebody from school you knew.
I'm not sure about the talk though. We went there to shoot the shit. Serious soul-to-soul conversations took place in the more private atmosphere of our rooms.
