You're right, on Buffy, they went to the coffee shop while they were in high school. When I was in high school, our town didn't even have one, but that's before the trend hit Indiana.
I just asked my co-worker, who is ten years younger than me, and she didn't think that the notion was unusual. I don't either. If there had been a coffee shop in my hometown, I would have been there whenever I could. I see youngin's there all time.
Oh, that does remind me. The University I work for, has an academy for juniors and seniors in high school and they are always hanging out at the coffee shop.
I don't know why anyone would think it wouldn't be realistic. The high schoolers may decide to go elsewhere to have some fun, but I can see high school students going there too. If anything else, they would think it's cool and want to be cool too.
