Well, I happen to be a teenager myself, but from Arkansas not California. We have a Starbucks, and although we don't neccesarily go there right after school we do go there to hang out. Not many people get "real" coffee, though. My friends and I tend to order frappucinos or flavored tea.
We don't talk about anything too deep either. Conversations are usually limited to parties, relationships, etc. And honestly, the main reason we go there instead of Sonic is because we have a workaholic friend who can get us free drinks.
So, maybe that helps? I imagine that if we Arkansans go hang out at Starbucks, then so do teens from all over the US. As long as there isn't a major heart-to-heart at the coffee house, I don't see why anyone would find the scene unrealistic.
Reason is the natural order of truth; but imagination is the organ of meaning. ~C.S. Lewis Nickelette
