Brand Name Question

Is Blackberry a brand name like Kleenex and Band-Aid? Technically, a Kleenex should be called a facial tissue and a Band-Aid should be an adhesive strip. Like how some people will call any soda a Coke?
I want my character carrying a hand held device like a Blackberry, but want to avoid brand-names. But saying 'the hand-held device's carrying case' sounds awfully wordy. Any suggestions?
