I would say the most common problem from not taking care of your sword would be that it grows dull. Even then, you have to make sure you sharpen it correctly. Otherwise, you're probably just wearing out your blade faster. Then, depending on what it's made from and where you're keeping it, it could grow rusty. If you're actually running people through with it, not keeping the blood cleaned off would harm it. Of course, if it ends up with a lot of mud and other gunk on it from practice, it could harm it. I guess that would be the rusty issue. If the character was entrusted with one that was covered in jewels or precious metals, the gold leaf could flake off or jewels could be lost.

Maybe that was more ideas than you cared to have...
