I had to google Hot Topic (I'm German), and it wouldn't bother me to encounter an unknown store chain in a story. Stories can become dated if there are clues to when they happen. As far as I heard, the most dangerous things are technical gadgets, like mobile phones, beepers, the internet, computers and so on.

It might become a problem if you were trying to sell the story in 10 or 15 years. You know what? I'd postpone thinking about it until then.
