Yeah I was surprised to have won by default :P It might not be the best suggestion, but when I was thinking of entering my book to be reviewed I considered making an announcement in my signature to advertise the contest. Possibly have a premade one set up for the author to include in their signature. Also consider getting sponcers for the item so it can make its way to the WDC main page? Just some ideas :)
