GIF works for transparent images as well, though it tends to pixelize images a bit, especially with a lot of the simpler image editors. GIFs also tend to not like faded transparency much. I think those are the only two image files that support transparency.
Actually, I've never managed to get PNG transparencies to work online, for some reason...
And I think maybe I got further off topic than you. Then again, this was brought up because of the issue of images blending in with the background... meh.
