A fracture that will surely put you in the hospital is a compound fracture, or any break that will need pins or screws to put the bone back together. A compound fracture is when part of the broken bone sticks out of the skin. You can get an infection that can kill you.

Pins and screws will speed up the time to get back on your feet. A bad break that does not need pins or screws will have you in a walking cast in about six weeks. The walking cast may come off after about two or three months after the injury.

I have had such an injury myself. And, I use to work in the nursing field.
