The other sci-fi theme of the era was Martians invading earth and blowing us all to smithereens for a while before 1) a scrappy kid discovered some way to destroy them or 2) they took over earth altogether as punishment for our hubris.

The original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", anyone?
