I have cousins who had cell phones when they were six.

The cartoons I remember from when I was really little were the Smurfs, but when I was, say, 10, it was all about the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Anybody remember those? :D

I can barely remember when the Berlin Wall came down, which is kinda a point of pride for me, but I had no idea of the significance of it at the time (I was only like six). Dad explained that communism in the Soviet Union was ending, but I was all like, "Well, about time, isn't it? Communism is bad, right?" (When you're six you have a limited understanding of complex philosophical ideas.)

Nowadays I sometimes refer to an uber-crunchy parenting magazine I get as "my pinko commie parenting magazine"--mostly in front of my inlaws, who can laugh at that but would otherwise get all horrified that I get a magazine that advocates things like raw food and co-sleeping. Parenting controversies aside, their 16-year-old daughter looks at me funny every time I say it, and I finally realize she doesn't understand that "pinko" is a derogatory term for "Communist".

So yeah, there's a reason I don't write YA.
