You make a good point (both of you) about LOTR and the characters. I felt the same way about the Dragonlance books - I only liked the ones that were focused heavily and canonically on the main characters. Then again, that's probably why I couldn't make it through the books...I wasn't too concerned with how the trees (non ent trees) were growing, I wanted to know what the characters were doing.
This is the novel version of 'Apathy's Hero'/'Captain Apathy' (I can't remember who read the original before it was accepted/I deleted it)...I'm probably (hopefully) going to be pushing 70-80k...which is also not fantasy length, or epic...though it is epic, but...can urban fantasy start in the BC's and just end in an urban setting?
I should probably stop trying to define and just write, but...where's the fun in that
