Most likely, in the jumping cursor problem, your thumb is touching the touch pad and your cursor is jumping to wherever your mouse pointer is. It is the most annoying thing ever in the land of laptops. It's why I have a separate mouse for my Netbook and the touch pad turned off. I have "fond" memories of cursing out my husband's laptop for that exact problem. lol His command to turn the touch pad off is a small button right above the pad itself. He also has a separate mouse. Thank goodness.
As for the other. It also sounds as if you need to check the "insert" option on your computer. Most often, we leave it so when we fix something, it just puts the letter in and shifts everything with it. But if you hit that "insert" command on the keyboard, it turns it into "Over Write." That means, of course, that anything you type will just go right over the top of what's over there instead of shifting it to accept the additional letters. I hit that on my keyboard periodically. It always takes me awhile to catch that.
