Yes, it is probably the laptop's touchpad.
Some people use an external mouse to go around this.
A friend told me to disable the touch pad for the wandering cursor problem to go away.
Here's how to disable it:
Go to control panel
Click on mouse icon
Go to the device settings tab and disable the touchpad. The touchpad will work but won't do its fancy dance.
Supposedly, after you enable it again, the problem may not happen.
Since I am chicken, I didn't do that.
In my laptop's case, I don't have the double character problem, but the cursor gets drunk sometimes and wanders around. So I usually click on alt and the space bar at the same time, and it starts behaving itself, albeit for a short time..
