I was given permission to share the link to this calendar with a newbie that just heard about nano and has decided to join up. This calendar give ideas for ways to flesh out your characters and scenes without actually beginning the novel.

To me, fleshing out your novel would be better than working on other projects, that way you won't have to figure it all out next month. You'll still have to figure out enough, but not start from scratch. I did nano last year, but didn't do very well because I didn't find out about the prep in October until nano began.
