You enter in your current total (which overwrites the previous total). No need to do any math. If you have 1,000 words in there and enter in "2,312" the updated NaNoCounter will read 2,312. If you then enter in "1,854," the updated NaNoCounter will read 1,854 (if for some reason, you wrote negative words... ). No math required; the NaNoCounter merely broadcasts what you tell it to.
