No, your writing doesn't have to be anything close to perfect! NaNoWriMo is completely about quantity, and not at all about quality. Nobody else even needs to read what you've written, so it doesn't matter how good or bad it is; either way, you win if you reach 50,000 words.
You can just do brainstorming sort of writing, or you can take more time before NaNo begins (or during NaNo) to plan it out. What you write and how you write are up to you--and you don't even have to write the same way every day. Sometimes last year I did sit down and type and type, but other times, when I had more time and fewer words to write in that time, I thought things out more completely. So whatever works for you.
