There is such a thing called burnout, and you don't want to drain the fun out of "making up."
I have about six characters and an idea. That's it. Whatever else I do will probably stay inside my mind.
On the other hand, if you were writing a novel, but not in a hurry, I would suggest doing all the preps if it were your first time writing a novel.
