Enter the site contests; win or lose, the experience is priceless.
Sometime last year or the year before, Short-Shots had a dock photo on which the contest was based on. My story didn't win, but the photo glued itself inside my mind. Now a dock will be my protagonist's favorite spot, come November.
Then a few months ago we had a character contest. Again, my entry didn't win, but that character is making her way into the antagonist role in this year's NaNo.
Thus I owe a great deal to WdC site contests for this year's NaNo idea. (No worries! I won't hold site contests responsible if my novel is a flop. )
Maybe, I'll make it a habit to enter the contests more often.
