If you don't have a story yet, pick someone you run across in class or at work, grab something about them that sticks out, put him or her in a funny, scary, or dramatic situation, and let the story write itself. See what happens.
You're really only competing with yourself, and for some people getting 20K words is the same as others getting 50K. Everyone has different circumstances. Be proud of the effort, regardless of how far you get. Never know, you could get on a roll and hit 97K by the 30th. It happens.
