Most of the time I write sequentially, though every once in a while something crops up in the petrified forest that is my mind and I just have to "go with it." I've done that with the final scenes of my NaNo story in outline form (quite detailed outline, I will admit), but not fully written out. I find that if I have to jump ahead like that, doing the detailed outline works the best for me. That way, I've got the ideas jotted down instead of lost in a whirlwind while still giving me some leeway as I progress to that point. If I write too much in a later section, I either feel "trapped" in how to get there, or end up having to make major changes once "the rest of the story!" (kudos to Paul Harvey, R.I.P.) catches up.
