I don't think we are breaking the rules. Last year, in one of the forums on the NaNo site, someone asked the question if editing as we write would break the rules. The answer was to get in the 50,000 words by the end of the month and if some editing helped, so be it.
They do, however, encourage as much free-flow as the writers can muster.
