I usually try adding a new element of some sort that will advance the plot in some way.

(in my case, I just made the crew of the MerryWench attempt a light-speed "jaunt" right after Iscan swore the lightspeed drive was busted... interesting things have since happened-- including a fire in the galley and now lunch has been ruined! *Shock*)
