the word count thing definitely helps with anything like that.
for me? I am not a detailed description writer-- I don't care what my characters look like to you, the reader-- maybe they have brown hair, maybe they have purple hair, who cares?
Which is how I write when I write short fiction-- I have a tendency to let the setting fall into a vacuum, and I work on character development/personality/conflict and plot WAY more than setting... which is editable to become passable in short fiction, but it's ... something I have to do a lot more of as the novel goes on-- so that I'll have some to edit *out* when the time comes!
