I know what you feel. I'll admit I've done the same thing long time ago. The story isn't very bad, actually, but I kept adding more and more details that it becomes monstrous. Let alone the characters that don't matter to the story at all. But that was just for a short time; I then found a more interesting story, and then I leave it all alone.
So, yeah, I think sometimes, you have no choice but throw away what you've been working on. It's always best to admit when you're wrong. But as no one can be always right, don't forget to not change your story too often. As they said in the beginning of November, the most important thing in NaNo is having fun and writing your own draft. Yes, it's useless if you're not having fun, but be careful, it's also useless if you didn't keep going on!
Good luck with your new story! There's still plenty of time to catch up. Just don't really throw away the complete idea of the old one. Who knows? Maybe you'll need it someday later.
Keep going; you can do it!
Good luck, man. Nano is coming... "Don't worry, kids, I don't bite. I write!"
