Mum, I've seen the same thing, the NaNoWriMo validator giving more on the word count than my MS Word does. I currently have a 68 word discrepancy (MS Word - 22535, NaNoWriMo - 22603). I'm going with the count on NaNoWriMo, but my plan is to have a good cushion over the 50K mark (at least 1,000 words) on the NaNoWriMo validator to make sure I can have the 50K no matter where the count comes from. Speaking of word counts -- at the risk of bragging a little, I've got 22,603 in six-plus days of writing (I started two days late). I still need a lot of words, yes, but I'm making progress!  And I've still got a lot of story ideas to get committed to the computer.I think I'm going to make both of my goals: 1. Hit 50K words by 30 November (which I did last year); 2. Have the story completed by 30 November (which I did NOT do last year; shoot, I'm STILL writing the 2009 NaNo! It's just on hiatus right now as my 2010 NaNo rolls along). One big difference from last year to this year -- I've got a more narrowly focused story with a much smaller cast of characters (two main and a few supporting characters this year, versus what pretty well became a large ensemble cast last year).
