There actually is a feature like that available. First, go to 'My Account' and click on the 'Options' tab. Scroll down until you find the link that says 'Site Display Options'. The last option in that section will say 'Darken Background Color'. You can currently choose from light yellow, light grey and darker grey. *Smile*

In a semi-related story, you may also be interested in changing your theme (the colors for link/header text and background throughout the site). There was a sitewide e-mail sent about this feature, but if you did not receive it, I can gladly forward you a copy.
