My characters like tormenting me. I imagine them conspiring;

"Let's take this turn."
"But it's not in the outline!"
"Well, duh!"

Sometimes I'll be writing dialogue and find myself wondering "Where'd that come from?" I try to let those times unwind however they will, then go back to see what I can pull together from whatever is left of my original intentions. For the sake of a believable exchange, or a real-world character choice, I'll sacrifice well-laid plans any day.
