I can't add much to RIP's comments, but I would definitely agree about the character's voice. Get into the character's head and speak in the character's voice. A teenager would think "Mom" or "Dad" or maybe "Those idiots". Don't get too worried about some repitition, it's like "he said" - people don't pick up on it too much because they're used to kind of blanking it out.
