It was a comedy of errors. Actually, I met another writer on twitter who invited me to a Facebook group called Book Junkies. I went there and joined the group and she told me that she had been published and was very happy with the publisher. However, I did not put much stock in it because it was the new type of small press and I had heard some bad stories about small presses in general. So another month went by and I posted part of my book on one of their review pages in the group. The publisher contacted me and right up front in an email she told me the basic items in their contract and if I was interested, they would like to read the rest of the story. They are in California and they have several authors. I could not have asked for a better arrangement. They help with the editing and polishing, but they don't force you to change your own thoughts like a big publisher might do. They do a huge postcard mailing announcing the upcoming book. They will call any bookstore to help get you signing events. They act more like an agent. They handle all the digital publishing in several venues and then about two weeks after that they have the printed book ready. You still have to pay for each copy but the cost is very low and I was astonished. They help with the PR but as an author you still have to do allot of it yourself, but most people don't know that a big New York publisher expects you to do the same. And if they advance you any money and you book does not sell, they expect the money back. I am so glad I am not hooked up with a big publisher. My publisher is Inknbeans Press.
