I'd make up a place that's loosely based on somewhere so you don't run the risk of getting bogged down in the research of a real location. That being said, make sure you're at least researching or basing it on reality (unless it's a fantasy novel!) so the reader doesn't feel that it's inaccurate. For instance if it's based in a desert climate, you'd want to mention desert plants in the scenery and weather that would be true to the desert.
